What a beauty. Never get tired of watching this, such elegance and great skill.
As a task from our module in Digital Identity, we were asked to create a video portfolio of our work. i created this using mostly photographs and drawings i have produced in the last few months. The human body and its different states and conditions inspire my work. Any sort of sport and action motivates me. This is why I work with combining my interest in art with my interest in sports. I also use a wide variety of media such as drawing, photography, video/projection and airbrushing.
As i previously mentioned, i’ve been working on a body of work which consists of drawings. i finished this drawing in pencil where i tried to get a combination of the detail present in the tense parts of the body and the blur present in the parts of the figure which seem to be moving most. i defiantly prefer the pencil to the chalk pastels used in previous experiments, but i’m not fully convinced with the result.
i’m stuck and i hate this feeling. i guess my next step would be to try an other experiment maybe with a different pose, or possibly go back to depicting a sequence, as shown below, this time using pencil.
Our lecturer has finally managed to get us a model to pose nude for some drawing lessons (better late than never!)
These are my first attempts, each pose was either 45mins or 10mins long. Interesting experience, defiantly need more practice as i found it difficult since i am used to drawing from photographs other than real life.
From feedback received it was suggested to experiment with detailed drawings, once again combining movement with the human figure. This time, instead of depicting a sequence of images i chose to render a single figure with blurred out parts in the body to suggest the movement happening.
These where done using chalk pastels on A1 papers.
I am not sure about this result. First of all i believe that my previous gestural drawings depict movement in a better way than these drawings do. Secondly i still believe i need to practice this technique more often, as to achieve precise detail in the figure.
Apart from working on my thesis work, we were assigned an assignment project titled ‘Inconsistent’; inconsistency in one’s work. Therefore i chose to work with the theme of ‘Fat” due to the fact that i always sought to depict the moving body in my work, so this time, i tackled the opposite of this; the fat and the static.
I believe that in our society nowadays fat and overweight has become a big issue which is ignored and not acted upon. People seem to be taking they’re health for-granted. On this note, I aim to bring awareness to the viewer with this project.
The video below is a documentation of the process which took place in order to produce an interactive installation. i produced a drawing and projected it onto the viewer, each individual would enter the area, covered in a white sheet and stand in front of the projection. Opposite the viewer stood a mirror for the viewer to see himself/herself in. The reactions of several viewers were all recorded and it was interesting to see the shock present. It was a good experience overall and intend on working with projection and video for future projects.
